Charles Benton, son of former United States Senator William Benton (1900-1973), established this foundation in 1981. William Benton was also the owner of Encyclopedia Britannica and Vice-President of the University of Chicago. Charles Benton served as President of the Encyclopedia Britannica Education Corporation as well as Chairman of Public Media, Inc.
